Hot Water benefits or otherwise

No such thing as a free lunch.

When looking at an Aga the question often arises should we use the free heat already there and have the hot water option?

In days gone past when central heating was not as efficient as today’s
boiler the hot water was a viable option to consider when specifying an Aga. Thankfully times have changed and boilers have become more controllable and also considerably more efficient.

An Aga boiler will produce hot water 24 hours a day seven days a week. Most people only need hot water in the mornings and in the evenings. The basic laws of physics are if you take energy out (as hot water) you need to put energy in (as Oil or Gas) so the running costs on the Aga will increase by a surprising 50%.

One further point worth considering is that the hot water option is a gravity feed. That is to say that whenever the Aga is on the hot water is on and the hot water cylinder must be within 18 feet of the Aga in pipe run. On both counts this in itself may well rule out the hot water option for many people.
