Welcome to our Second Hand Aga Centre

One of the issues with buying second hand Agas is being able to know and identify what you are buying. are buying.

Agas have been manufactured in this country since 1932 and as such there are potentially a huge variance in condition and age of appliances available. Subsequently once re-enameled and reconditioned and potentially converted from solid fuel to gas or oil it can be very hard to differentiate models to the untrained eye.

Why does this matter?

There were three distinct and separate models of Aga that have been made from their inception up to the present day.

Standard First Aga models solid fuel only

Originally solid fuel only models were manufactured. Available in any colour so long as they were cream and remained in production up to 1965. Many of these models are reconditioned still and sold with oil or gas conversions fitted (often internally so pipe work is not exposed). These models can be difficult to identify, as they have often been re-enameled in the current Aga colours available.

Reasons to be cautious over this model when buying second hand or reconditioned.

Firstly they were originally internally packed for insulation with something called Kieselgur. This although an effective insulation material is completely hideous when moving an Aga. It looks similar in consistency to talcum powder and reacts in a similar fashion. Which means if you are selling an original Aga in situ you should consider the mess that a very large amount of Kieselgur will have on the kitchen area, where the Aga is being dismantled. Most Aga engineers do not like this work due to the Kieselgur and it may be difficult to find an engineer to carry out this work cost effectively. Special breathing apparatus should be used.

Secondly due to the age of these appliances you may find that when dismantled vital parts are broken to allow the Aga to come apart.  Many of these parts are still available but there are cost implications but also many parts are not available. Which means that if you cannot find replacement parts then the cooker is scrap.

Traditional Agas - Pre 74 models the second generation Aga Oil- Gas - Solid Fuel

These models were the first available as gas and oil. These can be identified by the large upstand at the back and are still worthy of consideration when buying oil or gas as the designs are ostensibly still the same today bar aesthetic updates and burner updates on the gas.  Our second hand Traditional Agas have been checked over and had all woprking parts that need replacing upgraded. Spares are still available for these models and they can be a good purchase.

Deluxe Agas - Mod 74 to present day the third generation Aga Oil - Gas - Solid fuel - Elec 30-amp (night storage) and 13-amp elec.

These are the current design of Agas made and have spares readily available. They can be indentified by the narrow upstand at the back of the top plate.
